Following my last post, I’ve been hunting around for a way to get at my shared items from Google Reader since Google saw fit to remove them without giving anyone fair warning that they were going to do it. Naturally I’m not the only one wanting to do this, and cleverer people than I have been working on the problem.
It turns out that the Shared Items database is still running on the back of Google Reader, so someone’s written an extension for Google Chrome that restores the complete Shared Items functionality. Since the database is still there, you can also access all your old shared items. The extension is called ReaderSharer.
Now, nobody knows how long it will be before Google retires the Shared Items database for good, so I’d advise grabbing them all and finding an alternative location to store them as soon as possible.
If you don’t have Google Chrome, I understand there’s a Greasemonkey script for Firefox from the same people. Or it’s probably worth temporarily installing Chrome to get at your shared items – there’s no need to use it after that.
