e17XPlanet

Use XPlanet to generate background images for E17.
NOTE: Due to recent changes in e17, e17XPlanet is currently not working. The nature of these changes means that the script cannot work without changes to e17′s code or the creation of a new module, neither of which I’m familiar with. I will consider what could be done about this in due course, but I’m lacking in time. Don’t hold your breath…

Update 12th December 2009: I have decided that e17XPlanet will be best rewritten as a module for e17. I have a couple of projects on the go that I want to get finished first, and then I’ll get to work on it.

Update 29th May 2010: I haven’t forgotten this – just had other things on. I’m now treating this as my highest priority low-priority task, so things will hopefully starting moving a bit more now.

Update 25th August 2010: I’m pretty close to getting an early look at the new eplanet module (as it will be called) in a suitable state for people to look at it. It won’t be pretty or fully functional, but it will at least draw a planet on your background. At the moment it leaks memory like a sieve, so I’ll sort that out and then release it into the wild.

XPlanet is a great desktop background generator that renders real-time images of the planets onto your desktop background.
E17 is the next generation window manager for Linux from the Enlightenment Project.

Unfortunately, XPlanet is unable to render its images directly to E17′s backdrop. So I’ve written a script that can.

Requirements

  • XPlanet 1.1.2 or later (earlier versions may work, but I haven’t tested them)
  • E17 window manager (last checked against e17 SVN on 23rd April 2009)

Installation and Usage

The README file supplied in the tarball contains all the installation and usage instructions.
Please Note: The script is designed to be installed and run from your own home directory, and not a central location.
